Bongo-bongoism
By way of Mind Hacks, I discovered this incredibly useful term, whose use should not be restricted to anthropology:
[Bongo-bongoism is] the trap of all anthropological discussion. Hitherto when a generalization is advanced, it is rejected out of court by any fieldworker, who can say, "this is all very well, but it doesn’t apply to the Bongo-Bongo."

I'd heard years ago a very similar phrase but it was lost somewhere in my mind. I'm glad I was alone in the room when I read this post, because I would've been embarrassed if someone had witnessed the laughter.
I'll be certain to resurrect "Bongo-Bongoism" - it won't be forgotten this time. Many thanks for keeping such a solid blog, I regret that I didn't come across it sooner. I've added it to my blogroll and RSS reader.
It is all very well that bongo-bongoism exists in the field of anthropology; it doesn't apply to math education.
Ah yes, I've seen this before.
Thanks, Matthew. And thanks for the laugh, Myrtle. I should have known that was coming.
